Do I Need Another Lens For My Nikon Besides The One That Comes With The Camera?

I’m getting started in some amateur photography, nothing big, and I’m thinking about getting the nikon D90. Is it necessary to buy an extra lens or is the standard 18-105mm that comes on the camera sufficient?

1st slr user buying the nikon D90 what would be betternikon 55-200mm f/4.0-5.6G ED AF-S DX Zoom lens or nikon 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6 ED D lens also does the higher the number 200,300 mean the farther the distance?
