What is the highest quality lens compatible with the Nikon D40 for the cheapest price?

I have owned my nikon D40 for a few months but the zoom which is on the standard lens is not very good and it also does not allow me to manual focus. I have researched lenses but they are all so expensive! Is there a nice one that is not too much money?

Is 105mm the best macro lens for Nikon D80? Does it matter if its not capable of AF?

I just found out that my nikon d80 is not capable of the auto focus using a macro lens 105mm. Is this a big deal, should I go with a different macro lens or do most people use manual focus while taking macro shots?
